Gate Remote Not Working
A systematic troubleshooting guide to diagnose why your gate remote isn't working, and fix it yourself in most cases.
Step 1: Is It the Remote or the Motor?
The first step is isolating whether the problem is with your remote control or the gate motor itself. Try these:
Test: Test with another remote
If another remote works, your specific remote is faulty. If no remote works, the motor has a fault.
Test: Walk closer to the motor and try
If it works at 1m but not 10m, range is reduced, likely a flat battery or damaged antenna.
Test: Check the motor's status LED
If the LED isn't responding to remote presses (no flash), the remote signal isn't reaching the board. If LED flashes but gate doesn't move, the motor has a mechanical or electrical fault.
Most Common Causes (& How to Fix)
Flat remote battery
Most commonReplace the battery. Most gate remotes use a CR2032 coin cell battery. Press firmly to snap the remote open (usually a coin slot on the back). Replace the battery and test, this resolves the issue in approximately 50% of 'remote not working' calls.
Remote lost its programming (code lost)
CommonThe remote needs to be re-programmed to the motor. This can happen after a power surge, control board replacement, or factory reset. See our guide: How to Program a Centurion Remote.
Motor has no power (load shedding or power fault)
CommonIf the area is experiencing load shedding and the motor's battery is flat, no remote will work. Use the manual release to open the gate. After power returns, the battery will charge and remote operation will resume.
Remote circuit board damaged
Less commonPhysical damage, water ingress, or age can damage the remote's PCB. A damaged remote shows no LED flash when pressing the button (assuming battery is good). Replace the remote, a new Centurion NOVA remote is available from us.
Radio frequency interference
Less commonNearby radio equipment, new appliances, or new infrastructure can interfere with gate motor frequencies (commonly 433MHz). If remote works sometimes but not consistently, try at different times of day. If interference is confirmed, the motor can be reconfigured to an alternate frequency or channel.
Frequently Asked Questions
My gate remote stopped working after load shedding, why?
During load shedding, the gate motor runs on its battery backup. If the battery depleted during the outage, the motor loses power entirely and remotes stop working. Once mains power returns, the motor recharges its battery and normal remote operation resumes. If the battery was old, the outage may have fully discharged it beyond recovery, requiring battery replacement.
I replaced the remote battery but it still doesn't work, what next?
After replacing the battery, check: (1) Is the battery installed with the correct polarity? (2) Does the remote's LED flash when you press the button? If yes, the remote is sending a signal, the motor may have a different problem. If no, the remote PCB may be damaged and needs replacement. (3) Are you within a reasonable operating range of the motor?
