Gate motor backup batteries are consumable items that typically need replacement every 2–4 years for standard SLA types, or every 5–8 years for lithium upgrades. This guide explains how to identify when your battery needs replacing and which replacement to buy.
Signs Your Gate Motor Battery Needs Replacing
- Gate operates normally on mains but slows significantly or stops working during load shedding
- Gate motor beeps rapidly (low battery warning)
- Battery is visibly swollen, leaking, or corroded
- Gate stops after fewer than 50 open/close cycles during load shedding (was 80–100+ when new)
- Battery is 4+ years old (regardless of apparent condition)
Choosing the Right Replacement Battery
Most Centurion D5 Evo, ET Nice, and DTS motors use a standard 12V 7Ah SLA battery. The Centurion D5 Smart uses a 24V internal lithium pack — this is not a DIY replacement and must be done by a JD Gates technician. Gemini garage motors use a specific slim-profile SLA that is not interchangeable with the standard 7Ah brick.
SLA vs Lithium Upgrade
If you're replacing a battery for the second or third time due to load shedding damage, consider upgrading to a 12V 7Ah LiFePO4 (lithium) battery.
