Why Professional Gate Motor Installation Matters

A gate motor installation looks straightforward from the outside — bolt the motor to the base, connect the rack, wire up the beams, and program the remotes. But the difference between a professional installation and a DIY or low-cost installation becomes apparent within 12–24 months.
Motor Base and Foundation
The motor base must be level, rigid, and correctly positioned relative to the gate's bottom guide. An unlevel base causes lateral stress on the motor, accelerating bearing and gear wear. JD Gates pours or uses a correctly sized concrete motor base at every installation.
Gear Rack Alignment
The gear rack must be set at the correct height and engagement depth. Too high and the motor's pinion gear skips; too low and it grinds. Rack joints must be precisely aligned — a 1 mm step at a joint causes a jolt every cycle, gradually damaging the motor pinion and control board.
Limit Switch Calibration
Incorrectly set limit switches cause the gate to strike the end stops with force at each open/close cycle — the most common cause of premature motor failure and PCB damage in DIY installations.
Safety Beam Installation
Safety beams must be mounted at the correct height (200–500 mm above ground) and aligned to within millimetres.
