A beeping gate motor is your system's way of telling you something is wrong. Ignoring the beeps can result in being locked out — or leaving your property unsecured. Here are the five most common causes of gate motor beeping in South Africa.
1. Low Backup Battery
This is the most common cause, especially during and after heavy load shedding periods. The motor's battery has discharged below the safe operating threshold and is warning you it needs replacement or charging. If the battery is more than 3–4 years old, replace it rather than waiting for it to die completely.
2. Safety Beam Fault
The infrared safety beams that prevent the gate from closing on a person or vehicle generate a beep pattern when the beam is interrupted or misaligned. Check for spiders, dirt, or debris on the beam lenses. Ensure the beam transmitter and receiver are correctly aligned.
3. Obstruction or Collision Detection
If the gate struck an object during operation, the motor's obstacle detection system will stop the gate and beep to alert you. Check for and remove any obstruction from the gate's travel path before resetting.
4. Motor Overheating
