How your CCTV footage is stored determines how long recordings are kept, how you access them, and what happens if the recording device is stolen. Here's a practical comparison of the three main CCTV storage options.
DVR (Digital Video Recorder) — Analogue HD
A DVR connects to analogue HD cameras via RG59 coax cable. Most support 2MP (1080p) to 4MP resolution. Storage: 1–8 TB internal HDD. A 1 TB drive stores 4 cameras at 1080p for approximately 7–14 days. DVRs are cost-effective for retrofitting properties with existing coax cable. Disadvantage: fixed resolution limited by the analogue standard.
NVR (Network Video Recorder) — IP Cameras
An NVR connects to IP cameras via Cat5e/Cat6 structured cable and supports 2MP to 12MP resolution. Higher resolution means better identification at greater distances. Storage: 1–8 TB HDD. NVRs are recommended for new installations. Remote viewing via app is standard.
Cloud Storage
Cloud storage uploads camera footage to a remote server. Advantages: footage survives even if your NVR/DVR is stolen; accessible from anywhere. Disadvantages: requires good internet upload speed, incurs ongoing subscription fees, and large camera systems generate substantial data volumes.
