CCTV Storage Options Explained — DVR vs NVR vs Cloud

By JD Gates Pretoria | Technology Guide | Published: 20 December 2024

How your CCTV footage is stored determines how long recordings are kept, how you access them, and what happens if the recording device is stolen. Here's a practical comparison of the three main CCTV storage options.

DVR (Digital Video Recorder) — Analogue HD

A DVR connects to analogue HD cameras via RG59 coax cable. Most support 2MP (1080p) to 4MP resolution. Storage: 1–8 TB internal HDD. A 1 TB drive stores 4 cameras at 1080p for approximately 7–14 days. DVRs are cost-effective for retrofitting properties with existing coax cable. Disadvantage: fixed resolution limited by the analogue standard.

NVR (Network Video Recorder) — IP Cameras

An NVR connects to IP cameras via Cat5e/Cat6 structured cable and supports 2MP to 12MP resolution. Higher resolution means better identification at greater distances. Storage: 1–8 TB HDD. NVRs are recommended for new installations. Remote viewing via app is standard.

Cloud Storage

Cloud storage uploads camera footage to a remote server. Advantages: footage survives even if your NVR/DVR is stolen; accessible from anywhere. Disadvantages: requires good internet upload speed, incurs ongoing subscription fees, and large camera systems generate substantial data volumes. Most South African CCTV installations use local HDD storage as the primary method with cloud as an optional add-on. Call JD Gates on 012 012 6285 for a CCTV storage recommendation for your property.
