Electric Gate Not Opening — Troubleshooting Guide (Pretoria)

An electric gate that won't open is one of the most frustrating home security problems. Before calling for a repair, work through this systematic checklist to identify the most likely cause.
Check 1: Is There Power?
Check the gate motor circuit breaker in your distribution board. A tripped breaker (often caused by a surge during load shedding) is the most common cause of a completely dead gate. Reset the breaker and test. If it trips again immediately, there is a wiring fault — call JD Gates.
Check 2: Try the Wall Button
If the motor has a wall-mounted push button, try that. If the gate opens on the wall button but not the remote, the issue is the remote (dead battery, lost code) — not the motor.
Check 3: Is the Battery Dead?
A completely flat backup battery can prevent operation even with mains power on some motor types. If you hear a rapid beeping, this is the low-battery alarm. The motor may be in a protection state refusing to operate until battery voltage returns.
Check 4: Is the Manual Release Engaged?
If the gate was manually released during a power cut and not re-engaged, the motor's drive mechanism is disconnected. Check the manual release key position and re-engage if necessary.
Check 5: Is There a Mechanical Obstruction?
A stone, piece of debris, or vegetation in the gate track can prevent the gate from moving. The motor will try to open, detect the obstruction, and stop. Check the bottom guide track. Call JD Gates on 012 012 6285 if none of these resolve the fault.
