An electric fence Certificate of Compliance (COC) is a legal document confirming that your electric fence system meets South Africa's safety standard, SANS 10222-3. It is required under Regulation 12 of the Electrical Machinery Regulations, 2011, made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Only a registered Electric Fence System Installer can issue one. The certificate covers the whole system, the fence and its energiser, and confirms it has been correctly installed, earthed, signed and tested.
Do You Need an Electric Fence COC?
Selling or transferring your property: if the property has an electric fence and changes ownership, a valid COC must be handed to the new owner. Your conveyancer and bank will ask for it before transfer.
Installed a new electric fence: every new installation must be certified on completion by a registered installer.
Extended or altered your fence: adding to your fence, extending it, or replacing the energiser means a new COC is required.
Insurer requires proof of compliance: without a valid COC, claims linked to your fence or to your property's security can be rejected.
